Trump Renames California ‘Liberal Asshole Land,’ Draws Ire From Across the Political Spectrum

In a move that stunned political commentators and angered leaders on both sides of the aisle, former President Donald Trump referred to the state of California as “Liberal Asshole Land” during a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday night. The remark, intended as a jab at what he called California’s “radical policies and woke nonsense,” sparked an immediate and widespread backlash.

Kamala Harris: ‘Disrespectful and beneath any leader’

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, a native of Oakland, California, delivered a scathing response during a press conference in Los Angeles.

“This is not just an insult to California; it’s an insult to the millions of hardworking people who call this state home,” Harris said. “We may disagree on policy, but to stoop to name-calling is disrespectful and beneath any leader who aspires to represent this great nation.”

Joe Biden: ‘I’d rather focus on ice cream’

Former President Joe Biden, speaking at an event in Wilmington, Delaware, seemed incredulous when asked about Trump’s remark.

“Look, I’ve always said Donald Trump is a divider, not a uniter,” Biden said, holding a cone of his favorite chocolate chip ice cream. “California has given us incredible innovation, culture, and agriculture. It’s the land of opportunity. And frankly, I’d rather focus on celebrating their contributions than coming up with childish nicknames.”

Gavin Newsom: ‘California isn’t going anywhere’

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has often clashed with Trump in the past, did not mince words in his retort.

“Trump’s words are not just offensive; they’re laughable,” Newsom said. “California is the fifth-largest economy in the world. We lead in technology, entertainment, and environmental progress. If Trump thinks he can reduce us to a crude nickname, he clearly underestimates the strength and resilience of the people of this state.”

Bernie Sanders: ‘Another distraction from real issues’

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent progressive voice, called Trump’s comment “another distraction.”

“At a time when working families are struggling to pay rent and afford healthcare, Donald Trump is out here throwing cheap insults,” Sanders said. “It’s childish, and it’s unhelpful. California, like every state, deserves respect.”

Andrew Cuomo: ‘Trump’s arrogance knows no bounds’

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joined the chorus of disapproval, calling Trump’s comments “typical of his divisive style.”

“Trump’s arrogance knows no bounds,” Cuomo said in a radio interview. “California is a state of incredible diversity and talent. Trump’s cheap insults say more about him than they do about the people of California.”

Bipartisan Criticism

Even some Republicans expressed discomfort with Trump’s rhetoric. Former Senator Mitt Romney of Utah called the remark “counterproductive.”

“While I share concerns about some of California’s policies, this kind of language does nothing to bridge the divides in our country,” Romney said. “We need to raise the level of discourse, not lower it.”

Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican, was more direct. “It’s ridiculous. If we want to win elections, we need to stop alienating entire states and focus on solutions, not insults,” he said.

Trump Doubles Down

Trump, for his part, appeared unfazed by the backlash. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, he doubled down on his comments.

“California has been a disaster for years, and everybody knows it,” Trump wrote. “They can’t handle the truth! Sad!”

As the controversy continues to simmer, analysts suggest that Trump’s inflammatory remark may energize his base but risks further alienating moderate voters and independents. Whether this latest provocation helps or hinders Trump’s political ambitions remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the former president’s penchant for controversy is alive and well.
